A coronavirus can cause respiratory symptoms that are similar to a flu or cold. The virus responsible for the current outbreak is known as SARS-CoV-2. It’s similar to the one that caused an outbreak in 2003 that was referred to as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The new virus is spreading more easily and faster than the one which caused SARS. It is also spreading faster than the SARS CoV-1 virus during its outbreak.
The disease spreads via very fine droplets or particles — aerosols — that are released when a person with the virus coughs, sneezes or speaks. The virus can stay floating for a long time in the air. It is possible to breathe it in or rub it on surfaces.
