Virtual Technology Review in Tourism and Hospitality

Virtual technology is a procedure that produces a digital version of an event or device, such as an online game or a trade event. The term”virtual” is used in order to differentiate the replica from the original however, it is not less real. Virtual machines (VM) are software-based emulators of physical hardware, like a server or desktop computer. They don’t need to be physically removed and may be used at the same time that physical equipment is located in different locations.

The development of VR has opened up new possibilities in the development of tourism, and the beginning of a new research era in the experience economy. However, VR research has not been fully integrated into more general literature on tourism. This article is designed to bridge this gap by thoroughly studying the literature on VR/AR/MR within tourism and hospitality.

Using the SCOPUS database, 80 studies from empirical research have been identified and their characteristics and trends are analyzed. It is evident that, since 2018, the number of research papers on VR/AR/MR in higher education has risen quickly, mostly due to the related devices have become more affordable. It is also evident that the VR/AR/MR applications are specifically targeted at undergraduates with engineering, science, and medicine-related majors being the main research subjects. Humanities research, as well as social science disciplines, like art and history are still a rarity.

VR/AR/MR can improve the students abilities, knowledge and confidence. It can be used to enhance the medical education of students and increase compassion for patients. For example immersive VR can assist medical students develop empathy for elderly patients suffering from chronic diseases of aging and enable them to assess patients suffering from dyspnea.
